Backup Exec jobs stay queued - will not execute
« Thread started on: Jun 1st, 2004, 3:34pm » |

There are many reasons why a Backup Exec 8.6 operation is queued and here are some suggestions:
Note: Some of these suggestions could also apply to prior Backup Exec versions. For version 8.6 and earlier, "Pending" status is displayed.
* When the server is paused the current tape operation will go to a queue state this can be resolved by un-pausing the server and is covered in more detail in TechNote "When trying to perform device operations, all jobs stay in a "pending" state." in the Related Documents section. The device operations on the server may be in a "'pending' or 'Queued'" state or "scheduled" if the backup server has been "paused." If the server listed on the "Media" or "Devices" tab in Backup Exec states "Server Paused" , right-click on the server and click "Pause" to start the server. The queued operations will now run.
Note: When the server is "un-paused" all 'pending' or 'queued' or scheduled jobs that are due will start. If this is not desired, the job can be held or canceled (aborted) by right-clicking the job and selecting either hold or cancel (abort).
* Verify that the media sets exist, both existing and newly created. Do an inventory of all the tape(s) and find out if they belong to any particular media set or to the foreign media category. If the media selected to perform a backup or restore operation does not belong to either the default media set or scratch media, all operations will display the "Queued" status. To resolve this, either erase the media or move it to an appropriate media set.
* When a job is manually started using the Run Now option, it could display the "Queued" or "Pending" status. This occurs due to the recent changes in the system time and date and can be resolved by restarting the Backup Exec services. For more details, see "Jobs that are selected as 'Run now' go into the status of 'Pending' and/or will not display the correct start date and time". in the Related Documents section.
* Jobs could be locked in a pending state if the tape device drivers or the tape device has changed, or Backup Exec has been upgraded. To resolve this issue, disable and remove the device from the Devices tab, and then restart the Backup Exec services. For more details, see "When performing any job operation in Backup Exec for Windows NT, the job will "hang" in a pending state." in the Related Documents section.
* When the Shared Storage Option (SSO) is installed, jobs may go to a pending state because a job has been sent to a device that does not have an active fiber connection to the backup server. For more details, see "Known Limitations of the Shared Storage Option (SSO)." in the Related Documents section.
* Jobs could be set to a pending state if the small computer system interface (SCSI) device times out. To verify the device timeouts, view the "Event Viewer System" log. Errors reported are event IDs of 7, 9, 11, or 15. SCSI timeouts will cause the SCSI bus to reset and this makes all the devices on the SCSI bus to abort their current command. The job in the pending state must be aborted. To abort the job right-click on the job in the Activity Monitor and select Cancel. If the job does not cancel with a small duration of time (which could be between 1 to10 minutes), stop all of the Backup Exec Services (this may take some time depending on the amount of time the SCSI devices takes to timeout). Any further device operations will need to follow the resolution of the SCSI timeout errors. For more details on resolving the SCSI timeouts, see "How to resolve SCSI bus timeouts." in the Related Documents section.
TechNote Summary: TechNote Title: When performing any VERITAS Backup Exec 8.x backup or restore operations, the job status displays "Queued". TechNote ID: 239555

I am having this issue with Veritas Backup Exec 9.1. Every 3 to 4 days (no pattern), the Veritas job hangs on Queued. No errors in the event viewer, all services running, no apparent cause. Any idea?

Can you be more specific? What do you mean - "V on Server Paused?" Did you mean the service was paused?

Backup Exec jobs stay queued - will not continue

Hi, I'm using Symantec BE 10 D on one of the windows 2003 servers & have a query for a "QUEUED" job. We have HP tape library, with slots defined for each job. One of the weekly (FULL) backup jobs is queued after backing up ~ 720 GB of data, prompting for a new media; where as the same job is configured to APPEND to an appendable media (else switch to overwrite option). I've also inserted a new media (blank) & then ran the inventory job; during which it prompted to overwrite (?) this imported media for the current queued job, where I responded NO (by mistake), as I wanted to lable it 1st. NOw even after lableing the media & performing a "Quick Erase", the job doesn't continue to use that tape; even if I respond to the corresponding active alert ! Any idea how to force this QUEUED job to use this scratch media again now? Thanks

In order for me to get 11d to catalog my tapes on a fresh install of Windows and Backup Exec I had to disable "use storage media-based catalogs" under option -> Catalog. If I left that checked the job wouuld never get past Queued after it read the tape label and header.

In our case we have BackupExec 12.5. At some point a right click left click on the device list may have put the server on pause. Backup jobs have been running. Unlock, clean, misc. jobs would go into queue mode. After reading above posts, I went under Devices section and Right clicked on media server name where attached devices are listed and clicked "Paused" once and then a second time to get queued jobs to go through.

Thanks ZOLTAR747,
That fixex it for me too. Thats a bit of a bug somewhere! I could run backups in BE 12.5 but all utility jobs would get stuck queued...
Under Devices section and Right clicked on media server name where attached devices are listed and clicked "Paused" once and then a second time to get queued jobs to go through.
Thanks, TiM24
